Learn more about our warm and friendly dentist, Dr. Vanessa Shewchuk!
Q: Why did you become a dentist?
A: I knew I wanted to be doing something in the healthcare field and working at my father’s dental office during my summer breaks helped me see that I would enjoy practicing dentistry. It’s a great combination of science and working with my hands, and I love that we can be so preventative.
Q: What’s your favourite part about your profession?
A: I like coming to work and being able to laugh with our staff and our patients – it helps patients feel more relaxed! There’s really nothing better than helping someone get out of pain, so that might top the list.
Q: What do you like most about dentistry?
A: Every day is different and it’s hardly ever boring! It’s also a great feeling when a nervous patient says “that wasn’t so bad!”
Q: What is your dental philosophy?
A: Only advise treatment that I would recommend if it were my own mouth.
Q: How would your patients describe you?
A: Hopefully they find me warm, with an emphasis on communication.
Q: What are your hobbies and interests outside of the office?
A: I’m a big Oilers fan, so the game is usually on at home. I enjoy yoga and being active, especially outdoors. Cooking something new and reading are also very relaxing, but it’s hard to find the time.
Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?
A: I can speak Ukrainian....and make perogies!
Q: What are some of your best oral health tips?
A: Firstly, flossing is like exercising – if you only do it once in a while, it’s going to hurt! Secondly, try out a tongue scraper and you will never go back.
